Things to expect on first visit

As a rule, the first visit for youngsters is intended to be a “getting to know you” session. The dentist will try to instill confidence in the child with reassuring dialogue and a calm demeanor.

The first session should be no longer than 20 minutes if the child is cooperating. The dentist will do a complete examination of the mouth, gums and teeth to determine if there are any underlying problems.

Next, if the dentist feels it is necessary, he may wish to gently clean the teeth to remove plaque.

Thirdly, the dentist will want to educate your youngster on the importance of oral hygiene. He may demonstrate the proper way to brush teeth.

Lastly, he will determine if there is a need for fluoride.
