A word about fluoride

When a small child is first taught to brush, it is important for the parent(s), or guardian to monitor how much fluoridated toothpaste the child uses. It is recommended that one should place only a small pea-sized amount of toothpaste on a young child’s brush. The reason for this supervision is to make sure the child is taught to spit out and not ingest the foamy toothpaste. The danger is not immediate but if swallowed for a long period of time, fluorosis can occur and cause damage to the developing permanent teeth.

Parents should also check with their community water supply to see if fluoride is present. If so, fluoride supplements may not be necessary. One should consult with the child’s dentist or pediatrician.
