New Guidelines for Parents of Thumb suckers
Thumb suckingÂ
Thumb sucking is a common habit that occurs during childhood. Most children suck their thumb even before birth as is seen through sonograms taken of the child. Studies suggest that this habit is a way for the infant to relax, feel safe and is comforting.
Although thumb sucking is a normal habit, serious teeth problems can occur if it continues after the teeth erupt. Most often, it is by age five, when the permanent teeth are about to erupt, that problems occur if this habit continues. It is possible that some teeth may get misplaced and require orthodontic intervention.
Studies suggest that children will usually stop this habit on their own. They usually stop when they begin school due to peer pressure or from the teasing of other children. If they don’t, it is a good idea to keep the child’s hand occupied, either with a toy or other hobby.
Let the child know that most of his/her friends no longer thumb suck or ask the advice of the child’s dentist. The main thing to remember is to not punish the child. Placing fear or anxiety on the child is not good. Thumb sucking will pose no significant health problem other than possible misplaced teeth, which can always be corrected.
