Born in New York in 1937, Mr. D'Amato received his law degree at Syracuse University Law School and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1962. He was elected to the United States Senate on November 4, 1980. He served three distinguished terms in the Senate. During his tenure, Senator D'Amato fought successfully for a wide range of issues, including securing hundreds of millions of dollars for breast cancer research. He also passed landmark legislation, known as "Janet's Law", which compels insurance companies to pay for reconstructive surgery for breast cancer patients.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, Al D'Amato led the fight to restore to Holocaust survivors and the heirs of victims the assets they deposited in Swiss Banks prior to World War II, eventually having Swiss Banks pay over 1 billion dollars in restitution to survivors' groups.

As Chairman of the Committee on Security and Cooperation in Europe (The Helsinki Commission) Senator D'Amato authored the Libya Sanctions Act to combat efforts by renegade nations to finance international terrorism through oil field developments.

Since leaving the Senate, Al D'Amato has established Park Strategies, a business consulting firm, with partner Wayne L. Berman. He was also appointed by the United States District Court of the Southern District of New York as Special Master in the Holocaust settlement case with the German and Austrian banks.

Al D'Amato can be seen as a regular contributor/commentator for the Fox News Channel. He also writes a monthly advice column for George Magazine.
